If you don’t know anything about Argentine Tango apart of the tons of cliches which many people have in their minds, you really might ask yourself “What the heck is that guy talking about?” Just give me a minute and I will explain. Maybe you know Tango only from movies where obscure figures on dim lighted dance floors do strange movements, chewing wagon loads of roses. Maybe you made up your judgment about Tango having seen ballroom dance competitions, frozen smiles, rigid moves, heads twisting unnaturally with every movement… Could be you went to a Tango Show, spectacular, technically brilliant sensual and maybe most impressive.
How Important Are Good Contacts in the Dance Industry?
Having well located contacts in the dance industry can help you in your dance career. In fact it can even mean that you are never out of work in the dance industry. Can you succeed without contacts in today’s dance industry?
The answer luckily is yes. Although having some strong contacts can definitely make things easier than they can be, choreographers are always looking for new talent and new dancers to work with.
There are enough jobs in the dance industry so that even the people with no contacts in the industry can make a successful career if they have enough talent. If it wasn’t this way you would only ever see the same faces in all the music videos.
Getting Your Big Break in Dance
Hundreds and often thousands of dancers in one room. Dancing their hearts out trying to impress the choreographers and clients at dance auditions. For that one part.
It’s the typical life of a dancer going from one audition to the next. Most dancers who’ve done it for any length of time accept that you get some, you lose some.
But then sometimes there are dancers who are just trodding along doing normal dance jobs, nothing too high-profile then suddenly they get one big job like in a music video. And then after that they get another one and after that the work never seems to stop.
Dancing – Friend Business?
There’s been many stories of people back-stabbing each other in show business. Sometimes it’s just that it’s such a high profile business that everyone notices. But some people are willing to do whatever it takes to get ahead. Which is why some people (like in the show ‘Friends’) might say “It’s show business not friend business.”
Having said that the power of friends cannot be underestimated. Whilst contacts are not everything making lots of friends certainly does not harm your work prospects.
